About
the Club |
On 14 November 1885, Lt Gen Sir Henry
d'O Torrens held a meeting at the castle in order to introduce golf and start
a golf club. This was where the Cape Golf Club, the first in South
Africa, came to be.
The club was situated on the Waterloo Green at the Wynberg Military
Camp. In 1891 it was moved to Rondebosch Common but this was found to be
an unsuitable location as the common was open land and used for recreational
purposes by horsemen and football players alike. This made maintenance
of the greens and fairways an impossible task.
14 years later, in 1905, the club was once again relocated. This time to
its current position with the official opening taking place in 1906. The
Club hosted the SA Open and the SA Amateur Championships for the first time in
1910. By this time, the game of golf had grown with leaps and bounds in
the Cape Peninsula.
During the same year, the Club received a visit by HRH Duke of Connaught.
He was at the time representing the King at the opening of the first
Parliament of the Union of South Africa. King George V conferred the
title of Royal on the Club during 1910 to commemorate this historic
visit.
