| General
The international recommendation for the flag
colors
is used at Mowbray, namely Red for the back of the green, Yellow
for center and White for front.
Distances are measured in meters to the
center
of the green and markers are sunk on the middle line of the
fairways for 150, 100 and (for5 the longer holes) 200 meters.
The 150 meter mark is generally opposite the small palms in
the rough on the right hand side of the fairway.

Hole1
Par 4, 272m
An interesting "dog- leg" to the right which the good
player often takes on with a mid iron over or just left of the
bunkers you'll see from the tee. It's more fun, however,
to fire a driver over the trees. There's a greater margin
for error than you may think and a good drive will leave you
a half wedge to the green
|
Hole
2
Par 4, 370m
This hole plays very long, especially when the prevailing wind
angles down the fairway from the right. If you hit a cracking
long second, it can be a bit frustrating to find you have run
through to into the bunker at the back of green!
|
Hole
3
Par 4, 318m
This is not as daunting as the previous hole. A useful tip
would be to pocket the new ball and use one that's done a bit
of mileage. There's a dam just short and to the right of the green
and the ground slopes towards the water.
|
Hole
4
Par 3, 164m
The first of our not- so- short short holes, especially from the
back tee, when you're looking at 180 meters.
The green is well bunkered. This is an excellent test of
your skills.
|
Hole
5
Par 4, 321m
Unless you're very long off the tee, aim for the bunker on the
right. The green is bunkered on both sides so it's a good
idea to hit a little more club than normal and play for the back
of the green.
|
Hole 6
Par 5, 443m
One of the easier holes, if you discount the drainage ditches
which catch the errant drives on either side of the fairway.
A swale running across the fairway about 125 meters from the
green is generally out of play, unless you had a poor drive.
|
Hole
7
Par 4, 343m
This is stroke 1, though it's not the most difficult hole on the
course. A straight drive and a mid iron will see you nicely
on the green. Note the bird life on the dams and pause on the
green to look back at Devil's Peak on your left and Lion's Head
on your right.
|
Hole
8
Par 3, 149m
This is a great hole. Make sure you carry the bunkers protecting
the pin or aim at Lion's Head and come in from the left.
|
Hole
9
Par 5, 463m
Not the easiest hole on the course! Don't hook your second
into the trees, if you're too far right, you have quite a testing
third especially when the pin is on the right. If you land
up in the first of the two bunkers on the right, you have your
work cut out to miss the second.
|
Hole
10
Par 5, 451m
Now for more the difficult home nine! The tenth is a fairly benign
dog- leg to the right. To make sure of your par, take an
iron for your second, as the fairway gets pretty narrow and it
doesn't pay to be in the trees.
|
Hole
11
Par 4, 283m
This is not so difficult! Favor the right-hand side of
the fairway from the tee but if you're too far, there's a bunker
to catch your drive. The water to the right of the green
shouldn't be a problem but the sloping green will bring out the
best in your putting. |
Hole
12
Par 4, 342m
It can play long when the South-Easter is pumping but is otherwise
straightforward and for once you'll not be bothered by any bunkers. |
Hole
13
Par 3, 16m
There are more dropped shots here than at any of our other short
holes. The dam on the right probably yields a greater supply
of golf balls than any of the other water hazards and the trouble
is that if you miss the green on the left, it's a difficult little
chip. The green is two tiered which adds to the interest.
|
Hole
14
Par 5, 434m
A comfortable par 5 - watch out for the bunker on the right of
the green. |
Hole
15
Par 4, 376m
This is Mowbray's most famous hole and is also the start of what
is known by members as "crumble corner" because so many
good scores have been ruined from here on. There's a spectacular
view of the mountain right ahead of you and you need a really
good second to find the green, which is partially obscured by
a large mound on the right. |
Hole
16
Par 3, 135m
Here you also hit towards the mountain.
The green is well bunkered and slightly uphill from the tee, so
take a little more club than usual for this distance.
|
Hole
17
Par 4, 360m
What makes this hold challenging is the built up green.
If you land short, the ball often won't get home and if you're
slightly to the right, it veers off and also misses. Pitch
the green, however, and you'll often roll over. If you don't
make it in two, never fear. A bit of backspin or a bump-
and- runner with an inspired touch will get you close enough for
a par.
|
Hole
18
Par 4, 400m
If you make your par here, you'll be forgiven for boasting!
Following a good drive on the fairway, you can have a go at the
green (in the summer) if you're capable of the pin- point accuracy
necessary to find the gap between the bunker protecting the green
and the water on the left. Depending on the whim of the
green keeper, you might find the most diabolical pin placement
and difficult- to- read slopes. Otherwise it's a great hole
and the fine looking clubhouse is waiting to welcome you.
